This week was a week to be proud of! Three months into my current position I realized that I was going to need a better system to keep track of the various tasks I'm responsible for. Last year, I was a total Asana groupie --- and then I discovered Trello. Trello is a project management system that groups your tasks via a series of boards. It's an incredible tool for those of us who are visual and tactile. (See below)
Trello has allowed me to capture 99% of the tasks that I'm responsible for. Also as someone who likes to take notes I can transfer "To Do's" from my Evernote Notes into Trello via a plug-in. With this handy tool I've seen my productive and organization improve dramatically.
I won't bore you with the tasks that I completed this but I will say that I learned a few things this week:
- Having a monthly lunch with your boss is the best. My boss and I have a great partnership and it's in part because we take the time to connect as people. She knows about my fiance and I know about her grandchildren. Most of these stories are exchanged over a nearly monthly lunch that we have. Are you meeting with your boss to establish a human connection - if not, I highly suggest it!
- Writing daily helps stave of writers block. A coworker recently asked me how I manage to write so much and whether I ever have writer's block. Writer's block is the worst and unfortunately it happens to me more often than I like. One thing that helps me keep the block at bay is writing on a regular basis. Even on days when I don't know what to say I write. Lucky for all of you I don't post everything I write, but many of my blog posts are essentially writing doodles that have evolved.
- Spontaneous fun with friends is still possible in NYC in your thirties! This week one of my favorite musicians Shamir (watch this music video where he turns into a Muppet!) had a free concert at the Samsung store on Wednesday night. Typically this would be a moot point - but I rallied as if I was a teenage fangirl and convinced not one, but TWO of my friends to join me for a night of pop hi-jinks and fun.
Next week I have a single goal - stay cool, stay calm and stay collected. I have some high priority projects come to a crest and I need to keep my head together so that I can execute at the level I prefer.
Have a great weekend!
